Salute to San Angelo Organizations

Federation binds clubs

With so many clubs, organizations, sororities and professional societies around, it makes sense they’d all have at least one thing in common and the Texas Federation of Women’s Club is the link that binds many of them together.

By 1958, the group had grown so large its far-flung districts were reduced in geographical area to provide better communication and control among clubs, and at that time the group’s District 8 became known as the Heart of Texas District.

This Central/West Texas District shares the goals of its parent organization and sister chapters:
● To promote friendship and understanding.
● To offer diversified interests and afford opportunities for stimulation and growth.
● To train for leadership and provide avenues for worthwhile service.
● To strive to eliminate prejudice, bigotry, and selfishness.
● To train women for larger responsibilities in the life of the community, state, nation.

The Heart of Texas District offers annual scholarships to four area schools: Angelo State University, Cisco Junior College, Howard Payne University and Ranger Junior College.

And this year, the district is supplementing the statewide drive to contribute funds, books, games, kitchen kits, and other items to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Heart of Texas District officers are Mrs. T.J. Bailey of Ozona, president; Mrs. W.L. Bankston of San Angelo, president-elect; Mrs. L.A. Bryson of Rochelle, first vice president; Mrs. Truly Carter of Cisco, second vice president; Miss Martha Graves of Cisco, trustee; Bonnie Warth of Ozona, secretary-treasurer; and Mrs. Lewis Hale of Christoval, parliamentarian.

Las Hermanas club active in community

The 35 members of Las Hermanas Study Club of San Angelo share an active interest in community affairs.

Frances Keys, club president, said the group’s objectives are to:
● Encourage education.
● Promote culture.
● Serve on volunteer projects whenever possible.

The club was organized in 1940 and is affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Texas Federation, Heart of Texas District. Mrs. J. P. Williams and Mrs. J. W. Taylor are active charter members.

Efforts of club members are especially noticeable at area nursing homes and San Angelo Center. The group also contributes special projects and effort [sic] to Massie Club House, the Concho Valley Home for Girls, the Abused Wives program, the Little Olympics, M.D. Anderson Hospital and many other area programs.

Current officers include Mrs. Keys, president; Mrs. I. O. Westbrook, first vice president; Mrs. Ralph Hucheson, second vice president; Mrs. J. W. Taylor recording secretary; Mrs. J. W. Shelton, corresponding secretary; Mrs. L. T. Moore, treasurer; Mrs. H. B. Dun, auditor; Mrs. I. C. Rhinehart, reporter; and Mrs. Don Hale, parliamentarian.

Education, culture are encouraged

To encourage education and culture and to cooperate in any work which may advance the welfare of the community are goals of the Las Hermanas Study Club, an affiliate of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Organized in 1940 under the sponsorship of the Woman’s Forum, two charter members are still active: Mrs. J. P. (Nina) Williams and Mrs. J. W. (Gladys) Taylor.

The 37 members actively support Concho Valley Girls Homes, Meals for the Elderly and Girlstown U.S.A., and they decorate a nursing home at Christmas for the patients’ enjoyment. Also, this year a book (“Women of Texas”) was donated to the Texas Federated Women’s Clubs library in Austin.

Mrs. Albert L. (Frances) Keys is president, assisted by vice presidents Mrs. John (Vera) Willingham and Mrs. Ralph (Jewel) Hutcheson. Mrs. B. Kellie (Melba) Thruston and Mrs. Elizabeth Jones are secretaries, Mrs. L. T. (Edna) Moore is treasurer and Mrs. H. B. (Dorothy) Dunn is auditor. Club historian is Mrs. Albert L. Keys, the reporter is Mrs. S. C. (Mamie) Rhinehart and the parliamentarian is Mrs. Donald C. (May) Hale.
