Hon. Lyndon B. Johnson,
Vice President
Washington, D.C
Dear Mr. Johnson:
Thank you for sending me copy of your speech delivered Nov. 29th at the Medico Award Dinner honoring Adlai Stevenson. I have read the entire speech twice and I see absolutely no relevance between the occasion and your speech.
You had wonderful opportunity, it seems to me. At such affair an olive branch with a compliment to the medical advances of Russian doctors and an appeal to them to help relieve the suffering of the world might have helped Stevenson in his negotiations with these difficult people. Actually, your review of history AS YOU SEE IT will make his way even more impossible than it now is.
You say you “saw no reason to protect the Communists from the truth.”
Were you there to antagonize the Russians - or were you there to pay tribute to Adlai Stevenson?
A statesman could see my point - but maybe you are not a statesman!
Most sincerely

[Handwritten at top right] no answer naturally
Dear Mr. Johnson:
Reference is made to the Z-rox copy of question and answer in ACTION LINE. Dallas Times Herald 12/22/70. Like the ho-bo in the cartoon, I would like to know if you are receiving what seems to a social security retiree as exorbitant sums.
I simply cannot believe that an ex-president who happens to be in the millionaire bracket would accept such a large sum from taxes, a great portion of which is taken from business which are hard pressed to stay in business because of excessive taxes; to say nothing of taxpayers who are living on social security retirement pay.
I shall be pleased if you will advise me the truth in this matter.
Very Sincerely,
[Handwritten] (Mrs) Cordye Hall
P.S. would you be kind enough to hand the enclosed bulletin of ANOTHER MOTHER FOR PEACE to Lady Bird with my request that she join the mothers of the world in our war on war? Thank you!
[Handwritten] Copy- Mr. Harry Truman

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
TEXAS
United States Senate
Office of Democratic Leader
Washington, D.C
August 12, 1958
Dear Mrs. Hall:
I have read with interest your letter of August 6th and the indicted story in the accompanying tearsheet from the Times Herald.
I agree that wisdom calls for Democrats not to fight among themselves but to concentrate on affirmative support of the principles of our party. Of course it is hardly necessary for me to state that I had nothing whatever to do with anything that happened at the Dallas County Convention, and I am not aware that I have ever extended support to “reactionary fanatics.”
(Handwritten to the right of the above paragraph, pointing towards the last sentence) Lie!
Sincerely,
[Handwritten] Lyndon B. Johnson.

Dear Mr. Hall:
I cannot agree with your reasoning. I saw no reason to protect the Communists from the truth.
I am enclosing a copy of the speech exactly as I delivered it. The line upon which the Soviet Ambassador walked out merely stated that an attack upon Europe would be a hazardous enterprise. It is really hard for me to consider this “insulting to sensitive people for no reason.”

Mr. D.C. Burnham
Westinghouse
3 Gateway Center.
Pittsburgh, Pa 15222
Dear Mr. Burnham:
Your company is one I have always held in high esteem. I have many Westinghouse appliances in my house and they have given excellent service. It is therefore a great shock to me to read in ANOTHER MOTHER FOR PEACE bulletin that Westinghouse is in-volved in manufacturing for death in the making of:
Poseiden launcher and handling equipment engineering for Mark 48 torpedos.
Please don’t tell me, as another manufacturer of death listed in that bulletin told me, that you do not make the policies of this country and that you must cooperate with our government. America IS the free enterprise, capitalistic system, and as Paul Woolard, exec. V.P. of Revlon is quoted in the June 27 issue of The New Yorker, “It’s time for the really silent majority - the businessman - to be heard and let the Adm. and Congress know that they don’t have the wholehearted support of the business community.”
I ask you, Mr. Burnham, in the name of God. STOP building for death. Go back to the days when “we could be sure if it’s Westinghouse” that is was a product that would bring happiness to our household.
Most Sincerely,
(Mrs.) Cordye Hall

Mr. J. M. Roche, Chairman of the Board
GENERAL MOTORS
7667 Fifth Avenue
New York, N.Y. 10022
Dear Mr. Roche:
It is with some sense of guilt that I read in ANOTHER MOTHER FOR PEACE bulletin (June 1970) that General Motors is a great contributor to this war in their manufacture of:
81mm projectiles
155mm self-propelled Howitzers
warhead and exploder design for MK48 torpedoes
a sense of guilt in that I have never owned any other make of automobile but Chevrolets. Your products have given me good service and much pleasure, but I must say that I would not buy another automobile of General Motors make unless I could be assured that you are out of the war business.
There is the “Corporate Executives Committee for Peace” recently organized in New York at which many prominent businessmen expressed their intention to contact the Adm. and Congress and let them know of their feeling that this war is ruining our country, from every standpoint. I wish you could tell me that your great corporation is represented in that organization.
Most sincerely
(Mrs.) Cordye Hall
P.S. – read June 27 1970 THE NEW YORKER – page 26.

An open letter to Pres. Ronald Reagan 6/22/82
Pres Ronald Reagan
White House
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:
Your speech to the United Nations was so divisive that the few positive overatures you made were rendered worthless, especially when you did not meet the challenge of Mr. Brezhnev to deny first use of nuclear bombs.
A person capable of leading a nation - probably the world - into a path of peaceful endeavor should have more sensitivity than to castigate another member of the U.N. before that body. You, Mr. President, and Lyndon Johnson are the only 2 presidents in my memory with such a lack of diplomacy.
Russia’s takeover of Czechoslovakia is deplorable (they would alibi that they are trying to put a buffer between themselves and a nation which has violated their border – Germany. We would say that devastated Vietnam in order to save it. Has either a clean record to crow about? If still unconvinced, what about Cambodia? Against the advice of our native-language speaking diplomats there that the U.S. should stay out of Asia (And were forced into exile for telling the truth), during Prince Sihanouk’s vacation from Cambodia, Nixon ordered bombing of that beautiful little country when lied about it. Are we proud of that? Can we hold ourselves up as models of behavior in accusing other nations?
You castigate Russia from manufacturing chemical death – as well you might if they are doing it, EXCEPT, we are making nerve gas in Arkansas this moment, a thing terrifying to me because I watched my brother die by inches from having mustard-gassed by our now friends - the Germans, in WWI.
You refer to broken treaties. That deserves some research; however the U.S. has broken treaties with the American Indians time and again.
I am trying to show you that neither the U.S. nor Russia has a history that would make of it a model. If we really work toward world peach, blotting our propaganda and our desire for profits for munitions manufacturers, we will work toward spending our tax dollars for, food, transportation, education, environment and other NEEDED commodities which would employ the now unemployed.
So- - I beg of you, take a battery pf psychological measures and psychological counseling. I think you are paranoid. I think the Russian hierarchy is paranoid (with some justification since bombs have rained on them). TOO MUCH IS AT STAKE FOR WORLD CITIZENS TO ACCEPT THE INSANITY OF CONFRONTATION.
THE WAY TO HANDLE AN ENEMY IS TO MAKE HIM A FRIEND.
I am sincere
(Ms.) Cordye Hall

Description
An account of the resource
Cordye Hall writes an open letter to President Ronald Reagan after a recent speech to the U.N. Hall believes the president was lacking in diplomacy and that America has no right to condemn Russia in light of American actions abroad and at home. Ends by suggesting that the president should submit his self to a "battery of psychological measures and psychological counseling" and that he is "paranoid."
