Subject

Glaucoma

Description

Artist statement:

For this project I made the painting with a sculptural aspect to it so then people who have the illness are able to experience this piece. I incorporated muted colors and halos to represent what people see when the illness is present. The four photographs are another representation of the illness and how it really does affect people so suddenly. I wanted to make the pieces a tactile experience, something that will give anyone the enjoyment of experiencing the piece rather than just viewing it. Not only does it help with stimulating parts of the brain, it also helps with inclusion for anyone with glaucoma or visual impairment.

Medical description:

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. People with glaucoma can experience optic nerve damage from excessive fluid buildup in the eyes. Left untreated, this eye pressure can lead to irreversible vision loss. “Seeing Halos” consists of five photographs that depict the progressive and irreversible nature of the disease. These culminate with the illustration of eye pain endured. Components of color, designs, and texture were incorporated to highlight aspects of illness development. Sculptural elements of texture were included to allow people to experience the piece. This allows patients with glaucoma to partake in experiencing the piece.
